"Being a black woman and an artist, I believe there is a profound narrative to share, express, and advocate for."
Barbara “Barby” Beauvais is a Haitian American multidisciplinary artist from Queens, New York. Her work examines Black identity and femininity through visual art and curatorial projects that draw from cultural memory and personal experience. Across painting, photography, and printmaking, she explores how women are represented and remembered, creating spaces that celebrate legacy, beauty, and presence.
Barby’s practice is deeply rooted in research, community building, and education. She is committed to pushing boundaries and redefining conversations around the female body and black identity. In addition to her studio work, she leads "Le Journal Mauve," an annual publication that serves as a platform for women of all backgrounds to share their work and discuss contemporary issues. This project reflects her dedication to encouraging collaboration and community among women across industries.
Through her art, Barby aims to provoke thought, inspire change, and connect people across generations. She currently lives and works in New York City, actively participating in an all-female art collective and advocating for the arts.
